Blu-ray is a high definition disc. It uses a blue laser with a shorter wavelength to read the data (hence its name). Data is stored closer to the surface and has capacities of up to 200GB on a single disc in the future vs. a 9GB DVD. Currently only 50GB discs are being made. Blu-ray is currently being used for gaming and movies, but blu-ray drives are beginning to be put into computers. the advantage of blu-ray is that a normal dvd does not have the storage capacity to play HD movies, with blu-ray viewers can watch full length movies in vivid 1080p. Also, developers can make games 5x bigger and longer than before with stunning visuals. With computers you could backup all of your data in one or two discs vs. 25 dvds.
So, must you have a 1080i/p HD television to notice the difference between blu-ray and a regular DVD?
Or is there a noticable difference in a 720 HD television... or a standard tube television?

Blu-Ray...?DVDs hold more information than CDs...They need to because CDs just hold AUDIO information...DVDs hold audio AND video information...More space is needed.
Now folks are saying that DVD picture and sound ISN'T good enough anymore...To make the audio and video better, we need MORE space.
The Blu-ray disc holds more information than DVDs...It needs all that space for more AUDIO and VIDEO information....Clearer picture and sound than Hi-Def broadcasts!
"MEGS" are like "gallons" to computer geeks...More gallons, more room...More MEGS, more information.
CDs have 700 megs
DVDs have 9,000 megs (9 gigs)
Blu-ray discs have 50,000 megs (50 gigs)
(if "megs" are "gallons", then "gigs" are "1,000 gallons")
One more thing...Check out this link to see Blu-ray duke it out with its "evil twin"...Click right here: http://www.avtruths.com/blurayvshddvd.htmlBlu-Ray...?
Blu-Ray discs are higher density than DVD and can store a movie in HD resolution. It has a potential to go beyond 50GB in quad layer.
The Blu-Ray disks are played on Blu-ray DVDs, which have a laser that is blue, and has a shorter wave length and will store 5 X as much as a standard DVD. It will store 25GB on a single layer disk and 50GB on a double layer disk. The shorter wave length gives it better resolution than the red one with the longer wave length in the regular DVD. Regular DVDs will NOT play on the Blu-ray player.
I am going to keep this short and somewhat un-detailed
I believe it is a higher resolution version of a dvd therefor more expensive.
I hope that helps, good luck
way better than dvd
