Providing that your 5.1 surround sound system has an optical audio input. Then you can connect an optical audio cable from the tv to your surround sound system. Keep in mind that those home theater in a box are not flexible for adding anything to it. They are designed for you to watch a movie with surround sound only. A receiver is the best choice or you can purchase one of them sound bars. The only system I would recommend that is considered a home theater in a box is the Onkyo HT-S3400, it is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers.
