You can read all the reviews of blu-ray players you want, but nothing out there is better than the PS3. Even in the reviews I've read, they always compare the blu-ray player to the PS3. It carries the best sound, the best picture, has the Internet uplink to support live updates of software, is HDMI v1.3, and has the quickest load time. Oh, and rumors state it's about to drop in price by $100 within the next month or so.What do I look for in order to buy a very good Blu-ray player ?
The basic issue is how good the movie looks, after that I would suggest: how good DVD's look (players vary in how well they scale DVD); whether it has / you need HD audio decoders built in; what other capabilities it has (e.g. play games, stream netflix); and whether it is Profile 2.0 compatible (allows on-line extras). How well the manufacturer supports the player through regular firmware updates may also be a consideration.

Different players have a variety of pros and cons. You really need to decide what matters to you since, in general, better quality / more capability equates with higher price.

The best deal by far right now is the Pioneer BDP51FD Profile 1,1 player @ $284 (See link). It's not perfect, but it's considered a top notch player in most ways (CD, DVD and BD playback quality, build quality, multichannel analog audio support, tweekability, etc) but isn't a good choice if you want Profile 2.0 support (Personally I think that's well worth passing on to get exemplary performance in other areas).

But, I say again, you have to define what matters to you and decide accordingly. What do I look for in order to buy a very good Blu-ray player ?
you have to make sure that its got everything you want. For example: do you watch the special features? then you want your player to be BD live ready with 2.0 firmeware. Brand is also a big deal. right now the BEST blu-ray player on the market is the PS3. If you can hold off for awhile longer there should be a price drop around the corner.

you also want to buy an HDMI cable... DONT BUY IT AT A STORE. buy it online where they can run from 5-10 bucks... i got 3 and 2 where 6 bucks each and one was 3 bucks. If you have a frys electronics near you buy it there.
Try not to sweat the details... if you don't know what to look for, just visit amazon, browse to blu-ray players, and sort by highest rating. Then just buy the best rated one for the money. My Samsung BD-1400 SUCKS. It takes 120 seconds to load a disc most of the time. Still gorgeous picture and sound though.

The 1500 and up are much faster.
the Panasonic DMP-BD55K is expensive. But its superb image quality, excellent design, and wide feature set make the DMP-BD55K a tempting choice for shoppers with deep enough pockets.
