What is the point of downloading blu ray updates on a ps3?

I have a stand alone blu ray player and it has read all blu rays perfectly so far. Why is it that ps3 has updates for the blu ray player, does it enhance sound and visual quality of the movies? im thinking of etting a ps3 but dont know whether a ps3 blu ray is better than stand alone blu ray player.What is the point of downloading blu ray updates on a ps3?
