I have a samsung blu ray home theater system and 2 large klipsch speakers. I was wondering if I could unplug the wires from the back of the Samsung speakers and connect them to the klipsch ones. Can I hook up different speakers to a blu ray home theater system?
Short answer; Yes. Without knowing the exact model I can't get detailed specifications for either the Samsung system or the Klipsch speakers. I see that Samsung systems rated at a total of 1000 watts rate the individual front channels at 165 watts. However, many of these systems come with 3 Ohm speakers. The lower that Ohm number is, the higher the amplifier power will be rated. The Klipsch speakers are almost undoubtedly 8 Ohm. Thus your amplifier power will be reduced to about 75 watts or so per channel. Klipsch speakers are known to be very efficient. But they may sill play a little more softly than the 3 Ohm Samsung speakers. Given that are of much higher quality they will sound much better and will most likely play loudly enough with 75 watts to make the neighbors complain. Going to a higher Ohm number is safe. If you were to go the other way you would risk amplifier damage. It is also unlikely that you will blow the Klipsch speakers as long as you don't drive the amplifier into clipping - you will hear some nasty distortion if you do that. Most Klipsch speakers are rated at at least 100 watts. You are safe. Try it. Just make sure that you get the connections right and don't short the amplifier terminals.
