Is the ps3 as good of a blu ray player as standalone devices?

I'm interested in getting a ps3 for it's games and blu ray player. I just bought a new samsung 50inch plasma that I think would look really nice with a hi def movie player like that one. Thanks for the help!Is the ps3 as good of a blu ray player as standalone devices?
PS3 is a great blu ray player.

However, if you are going to buy it, make sure it do use it for the gaming. Watching a blu ray movie on a ps3 uses 3x the amount of power than on a regular blu ray player.

So if you're just in the market for a player, just get a regular one. They all play movies the same, the only differences are added functionalities on some.
I prefer the PS3 as a blue-ray player because it has the ability to update to better abilities without purchasing software.

If you want to play games AND have a Blu-ray player the PS3 is a good choice. BUT, other than fast loading due to its cell processor design, it's a pretty middle of the road Blu-ray player. It's also an energy hog (See Link 1. A typical BD player uses about 30 watts ... the PS3? ... about 4-5X that!). More important to most, from a video processing perspective it's not as good as any of the players in it's price range .... and not a patch on the Oppo player just being introduced (See Link 2).

But SA players that beat it cost just as much (or more) and don't play games.

You choose.
I haven't read many reviews lately.. but the first year +/- the PS3 was reviewed as by far the best Blu-Ray player available, and it was also cheaper than most standalone models. Now that prices have dropped, you can get standalone models cheaper than the PS3 but I still believe it is the best choice, for its ability to play games, download videos, and update firmware so easily.
PS3 is a good player, but the top. If you play games and want a blue ray player also then this is the cheapest way to go. There are high end players that cost $2,000 which most consumer will not pay for a player but they are out there. High end systems are not carried by normal retail store and don't bother asking for a discount. Here's some high end names Krell, Mark Livinson, Martin Logan, McIntosh, B %26amp; W, Bang %26amp; Olsen.

PS3 is at least as good as any player made. The Samsung 3600 (and some say the new Oppo) are on par with it, but they cost no less than the PS3.

The Drake's Fortune bundle160GB PS3 is going for $400 on Dell.com:

The UK retailer John Lewis has the PS3 as it's first item in the Blu Ray player category, and that's an endorsement as they only sell quality gear. If you also happen to want it for gaming all the better.
Yes its great, besides games and blu-ray playback

it makes a great place to copy your cd,s to and can hold a

lot of porn movies, so when the time is right you dont have

to hunt a disk up to play around.
